I invited her over for lunch, saying I could cook, you know, peanut butter and jelly. She laughed and asked me if I couldn't cook – didn't I have a wife. Then she said that I could buy the ingredients for a meal, and she would make it.
While I am generally not a person who has to be asked twice, I decided that I would make lunch for us both today (Oct. 1). Sunday, I put together a baked rotini with three cheeses, garlic and onion. I didn't make a sauce; I used Barilla.
Heading over to my class at 8:30 a.m., I found out that the class was canceled. BRILLIANT! Today was the 30th anniversary for Epcot – now, I could go and get my wrist bands for preferred seating at the Sugar Ray concert and for the special Illuminations fireworks scheduled for the evening. I went back to my car without going into my apartment, threw all of my books into the vehicle and decided to see if anyone was still in the class who might want to go to Epcot with me.
The classmate was walking back to the bus stop to go home. I asked her if she wanted to go to Epcot. She hesitated for only a second, and decided to jump in my car.
We went to the Chase Disney Visa lounge and got our wrist bands for the two shows. Then I had a cup of drinking chocolate from Ghirardelli, and we headed over to Mission Space. We also road Soarin’ and Journey into Imagination. We then waited in line to get the only pin that I was willing to get – the real special pins had wait lines of at least a half hour all day.
We made it back from Epcot just in time to eat the baked rotini and get to class on time. I have Creativity and Innovation in the afternoon – a class that gives me the freedom to be creative without experiencing any of the social consequences of normal societal rules.
After class, we went back to Epcot where we ate Schinken Nudel, which may be the best value at the International Food and Wine Festival if you don’t count the free packages of Craisins, and Apple Strudel at the Germany Marketplace and a lobster roll and pumpkin mousse at the Hops and Barley Marketplace.
We saw Sugar Ray – great show, sit dead center of stage or closest to that on the left hand side for a more personal experience. They sang all of their hits and poked fun at themselves.
We then went to get in line for the fireworks. She got us a helping of chocolate cake and passion fruit sorbet with coconut foam. And then came the fireworks.
The normal Illuminations show lit up the sky. It is a favorite of many people, but there are things about it that I don’t get and that I think should be done better, but I am as awed by fireworks as anyone else.
When Illuminations was over, the announcer introduced the Epcot 30th anniversary fireworks. This was the greatest fireworks display I have ever seen. EVER. The end was so loud and so large that my insides vibrated and I had to cover my ears. It was worth all of the trouble and all of the waiting. It would have been worth it even if I were at Epcot by myself.
To have someone to share it with, and particularly the person I was with, made a spectacular evening something very special.
