Spirit Shield Saga's first 2 books go from average to great
With similarities to Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time and echoes of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Seer of Souls provides a nice fantasy tale that is not as detailed, not as repetitive and not as glorious as the above-mentioned masterpieces. It might not be fair to compare a short novel to the seminal works of recognized fantasy genre immortals, but the first in the Spirit Shield Saga provides no new notes to the fantasy realms. It’s a nice read, and that’s about it.
Soul Sanctuary, on the other hand, provides a glimpse into something relatively new. With Aztec and Egyptian flavors, this second book in the series exposes the reader to new ideas and carefully planned excitement and adventure. It also sets up an epic battle where it appears that anything can and will happen. The best part is that just when you think Susan Faw has forgotten a thread, she grabs it and weaves it in again.
Read the first one, so you can get to the second and look forward to the third. (I won these 2 books from a drawing at Lilac City Comicon.)
Quotes from the series:
“Sometimes, one can do what an army cannot.”
“It is never one man’s victory or courage that wins a war. It is a hundred or a thousand small acts of bravery that carry the battle. No man is an island and their souls combined are stronger than any one foe.”
