‘Winchester’ provides repeating shots of adrenaline in satisfying fear filled film
Growing up near the Winchester Mystery House allows me to have a different view of this film. It uses the history of the known and unknown to bring to life a truly scary experience. It is genuinely, atmospherically frightening. Even better, it isn’t as predictable as maybe it should be for someone who has experienced the Winchester House firsthand.
Helen Mirren provides an amazing performance as the eccentric and haunted heir to the Winchester fortune. However, it is Jason Clarke’s tremendous performance as a laudanum addled psychologist that makes this movie so convincing. Clarke provides the right amount of gravitas and uncertainty to enhance the atmosphere invoked by lighting and setting. Sarah Snook provides strength and power in her supporting performance.
If you want a good film that provides plenty of jump scares and adrenaline while delivering a take on the Winchester family that may have more fact than fiction, don’t miss this film. Misdirection, strong performances and attention to detail make this film well worth your time and money.
