Two archers pt 2
Read part 1
Laughter rang loud and clear. Two raiders moved onto the pathway to intercept the archers. Each raider caught an arrow for his trouble and went down. The male archer reached down as he leapt his kill and grabbed the shaft of the arrow. It came loose with a slick, sucking sound.
“Huh, new arrow!”
“Ummmm…”
The warning from his ally caused the archer to look up. In front of them stood one of the largest men they had ever seen.
“Right.” It was a simple enough maneuver. They had practiced it several times. He would distract the foe while she ran around. They weren’t here for the kill, just to get by.
He loosed an arrow and shouted some gibberish at the huge raider. The arrow stuck in the raider’s armor, but the man showed no effect. The archer pulled a dagger. The man raised a huge axe, but the archer was on him before the man could start into a killing blow. She ran by the man, and the archer slammed his dagger and should into the man as hard as he could.
It was like hitting a rock wall. The dagger skittered along the boiled leather until it hit a ridge and was ripped from his hand. Fire burned his shoulder as he contacted the man’s armor and, ineffectual, bounced off. The self-inflicted blow spun him around; stars shot through his vision. He kept to his feet, barely.
“Come on!” He heard her voice in the darkness and ran toward her. His vision clearing.
“Yea. That didn’t go half as good as I had hoped.”
She laughed. “Got your bell rung, huh?”
“More than once. Dang, he was big,” he said. “I might have done something to my shoulder.”
“You going to be okay?” She asked.
“For as long as the rush holds, it shouldn’t bother me. It’s the afterwards that I am worried about.”
“If there is an afterwards, I’ll take care of you.” She gave him one of her special grins. “You know he is coming back for us.”
“Yes,” he smiled. “But maybe we will be able to meet him on our terms. Besides, after that win, he can’t help but underestimate us.”
