Batman vs. Superman - the Real battle
Batman vs. Superman dropped a new trailer on San Diego Comic Con, and it is awesome. Unlike the earlier trailer that was cryptic, vague and kind of stupid with a glowing eyed Batman, this trailer revealed more of the plot, who is involved in the movie and what may happen when the Bat fights Supes and why such a fight would happen. The outcome of the fight is a foregone conclusion with no real winner since the two protagonists will have to form an alliance of some sort if Warner is going to move ahead with a Justice League movie. Unless the movie takes a turn for the surprising and decides to kill off one of its main characters like the fan film Vader vs. Batman, the two heroes will likely fight each other to a standstill and realize that they are not enemies.
Of course, the real battle isn’t between black and blue, god and man or night and day. Instead, it is between the DC Comics Universe and Marvel’s juggernaut in the form of Captain America: Civil War, where there is more ambiguity about who will live and who will die – even if no one believes that anyone actually dies in the Marvel Universe.
While Marvel (and superhero fans in the United States) won the first battle when Warner decided move its release date to March rather than keep the same May 6 release date that Civil War had announced, Marvel will still have to overcome the expectations associated with being the second film released. If Batman vs. Superman is a bona fide hit and a great film to boot, Civil War will face the comparisons that stiff competition can offer. If Civil War falls short of the expectations generated by the Marvel name and by the quality of the story of the DC property, Captain America 3 could bomb and take the hopes of the Marvel Universe with it.
However, it is well within the realm of possibility that both films will do well at the box office. They are being released about 6 weeks apart from one another, and Jurassic World and Inside Out showed that two films could have massive box office draws during the same weekend. That means that it is up to each studio to produce better stories than ever before and focus on the characters involved rather than worry too much about the special effects.
Which film will win at the box office is anyone’s guess, but the smart money says this isn’t an either/or question because it could be both.
