Twin Peaks: Was it good?
While I didn’t like Twin Peaks, I am still questioning whether or not it was good. There must be a reason why it survived to find an audience 25 years after the original series aired. And there must be a reason why it has taken up so much brain power over the 24 hours after watching the series finale.
The series itself contains some amazing characters, who are iconic and strange. The Log Lady was phenomenal and the death of actress Catherine Coulson was handled with beauty, charm and just the right amount reverence. David Lynch constructed a masterful scene, and several previous scenes, that didn’t take away from the show and paid respect to the character and, by extension, to the actress.
James will always be cool, except maybe when he is singing. Hawk, Andy and the original Sheriff Truman provided the right crew for Agent Dale Cooper to work with. Of course, Kyle MacLachlan as both Coopers and Dougie pulled off an amazing triplet feat of acting. His characters made the audience feel sick, feel hope and gave the gift of comedy while all being the same person… sort of.
There are concepts worth exploring, too – namely, the black lodge, the white lodge, and where can one find a damn good cup of coffee with an amazing Cherry Pie (Snoqualmie, WA, is a partial answer). However, these may be the least of what might make Twin Peaks good.
For my family, Twin Peaks provided a shared experience to give us a place to start from. My now 17-year old stepdaughter loves Lynch and his movies. Twin Peaks was a good starting point for giving us something to talk about. And talk we have… The show has been THE topic of conversations for us, including my wife. More than any other movie or show we have watched.
It also provided a good vacation destination. The Salish Lodge and Spa is a great place to stay, and it overlooks the Snoqualmie Falls that are featured in the opening. Snoqualmie, where the Salish is located, has several of the film sites available for visiting. It was my stepdaughter’s first trip to the U.S., and Snoqualmie made it worthwhile for her.
Whether or not Twin Peaks was good, it was clearly good for my family. For that, we owe a debt of gratitude to David Lynch and his Twin Peaks universe.
