The Rape Recovery Center Empowers people who have been sexually assaulted
The Rape Recovery Center provides help for “anything along the spectrum of a sexual nature for adults,” said Heather Stringfellow, executive director, even if it happened in the past.
People can receive help for problems related to everything from voyeurism and groping to sexual assault and rape. About ten percent of the people that receive services from the Rape Recovery Center are male.
“We have a role to play as an unbiased party advocating for the victim in the hospital,” said Stringfellow.
When the Rape Recovery Center gets a call out, they go to the hospital to help the survivor understand what is going on with the medical exams, answer questions about the process and “empower people to make educated choices,” said Stringfellow.
Survivors also get a small pack of food and clothing because often times the police take the clothes that they were wearing during the incident as evidence.
Men receive a T-shirt or sweatshirt, workout or sweat pants, and boxers. Women receive a T-shirt or sweatshirt, capris or sweat pants, and panties.
In the fiscal year 2010-2011, the center responded to about 400 calls. That is up from the normal average of about one a day.
The Rape Recovery Center provides other services as well, including therapy and prevention education.
