School-based Big Brother 2010 Utah encourages others to become Bigs
A.J. Robinson received the 2010 School-Based Big Brother of the Year award after being nominated by his Little Brother match Saverio and then-coordinator Mr. Stanley. As of May 2011, A.J. and Saverio have been together as a Big/Little team for 2 years.
A.J. got involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah because he had a neighbor who was a part of the program and he needed community service hours for National Honor Society. Beyond filling a service-hour quota, A.J. says that he really enjoys being able to help out someone else with homework. He also remembers a time when he thought it was cool to be able to hang out with the older kids, and he said that now, “I am glad I could be the older kid.”
More than anything, A.J. said that he’s gained a “way good friend and a little brother.”
Saverio echoes his Big Brother’s sentiment saying that “he’s a good big brother.” He also says that he has learned to try new things like tennis and Spirograph by being with his Big Brother.
For those considering becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, Saverio said that “You should do it because it would be nice to help others.” A.J. agreed and added that you should “make sure you’re willing to put the time into it. They (the Littles) appreciate it and can tell when you don’t.”
A.J. will be going to Brigham Young University on a scholarship this fall.
