TarXien Temples 'restored'
Check out the slide show below.
Nestled in a residential area, the Tarxien Temples are a short walk away from the Hypogeum. While extensive restoration works, that look like someone decided to cover the stones in concrete without any care for what the stone actually looked like in ancient days past, mar the current location, there is enough to recommend going to this temple site before visiting the stunning Hypogeum and Hagar Qim.
One theory is that the temple sites exist in pairs so that one represents life and the other death. In the Paolo area, it is the Hypogeum and its 7,000 dead as well as its underground position that would represent death while Tarxien would represent the life rituals. Tarxien also has a well-marked early temple that can be found in other temple sites but is rarely talked about.
If Tarxien is your first ancient temple site experience, it should aid you in understanding what went before. Its layout is clearly marked, and informative signs give easy information that is translatable to other sites. And if you happen to be at the Hypogeum, you may as well take the short trip over to this temple area.
