College students Unite for Environment
About 30 people participated in this 2011’s introduction meeting for the Enviroclub held in the Student Event Center on the Taylorsville Redwood campus. The Enviroclub started in 2009 at Salt Lake Community College. It has since expanded to Westminster College and the University of Utah.
“Me, trying to save the world on my own, wasn’t really doing it,” said Todd Lehman, former SLCC student and current student at the U of U majoring in environmental and sustainability studies.
Brittany Evans, former SLCC student and majoring in International Sustainable Business at Westminster, said that the Enviroclub connects with other organizations and communities so that they can support each other.
“What is stronger than love and caring?” Evans asked. That is how members of the Enviroclub need to approach the issues – using the same techniques espoused by Gandhi, Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King Jr.
“This is our movement. This is our future. This is our kids. It’s our job,” said Evans. “We’ve got to present ideas and give solutions.”
The Enviroclub is looking for those who can help with events and held the introduction meeting to find officers for the club at SLCC. Clubs are self-directed and can choose their own issues to tackle. There are also events that all clubs are encouraged to participate in.
“You can party and do good at the same time,” said Brittany.
