Abalone vs. Octopi
“Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to the 92nd Underwater Soccer World Cup. I’m your host, Murray Moray, and along with my co-host, Boomer Blowfish, we’ll be bringing you all the action for this year’s contest. So, Boomer, as someone who has played on a World Cup team, tell us what the players are feeling right now.”
“Thank you, Murray. I’ll tell you what! The excitement in both locker rooms is at a fever pitch. The players are gearing up to show their talents on a world stage. This is what they played for the whole season, and now they will get to prove themselves on the field.”
“And let’s talk about the two teams that will be facing off today - the Octopi Octet and the underdog Abalone Ear Shells…”
“Well, Murray, first of all the Octopi Octet have to be considered the favorites in this contest. That team is all leg, and we all know that legs are important in this game. Plus their name is a misnomer. They make you want to think that they will only have eight players on the field, but they will have the requisite eleven. And then there is their goal line play. In any situation where the other team threatens to score, the Octopi lay down an ink cloud that makes it hard to see the goal.”
“I can see how that would be a distraction.”
“Not just a distraction, it actually obscures the opposition’s vision, and as we all know, you can’t hit what you can’t see.”
“Right. Now how about those Abalone; just how did they get here today.”
“Murray, I’ll tell you what, you can never count the underdog team out. Back in 1988 when my team faced the Diving Dolphins, the fans, the media and everyone else said we were outmatched. The Dolphins were bigger, faster, better swimmers, and they were smarter than the Billowing Blowfish. Fortunately, that was the year that I was able to innovate the Blowkick. It caught the Dolphins off guard and led the blow out victory for my team.
I think the Abalone Ear Shells have the same opportunity because they arrived on the strength of their communication and their feet. This game might be all about leg but having a strong foot doesn’t hurt, and these guys have those foots in spades. They’ve got the heart and the desire to succeed.”
“Boomer, you mentioned the blow out in 1988. Do you think we will see that here today?”
“Today, Murray, I don’t think that we will see a blowout – unless the crew puts some tapes together of that ’88 game. You have two teams that have different strengths – the Abalones with there holding-the-line defense and the Octopi with their eight leg attack. It’ll be a very interesting game. I do think that if the Abalone take an early lead, it’ll be a long game for the Octopi.”
“Well, it looks like the final line-ups are in, and the teams are about to be introduced. We’ll be right back with the opening festivities in just a couple of minutes.”
