Nathan Fillion, Patrick Stewart, Karen Gillan and Kelly Hu at Salt Lake Comic Con FanX 2014
Kelly Hu kisses and tells at FanX
“I have had a really long time interest in martial arts,”
says Kelly Hu.
When she was young, she would go to ballet while her brother went to martial arts class. He would come home and teach her what he learned and then set her up like a fight manager to fight other kids in the neighborhood. The first kid to cry lost. She was about six at the time. “I don’t condone bullying at all,” says Hu. “If you are going to ask me which one I like, I am going to go with the kissing,” says Hu. She got to kiss Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson but did not get to kiss Hugh Jackman. “I actually remember how soft his lips were,” says Hu. “It was his first Hollywood kiss.” Johnson didn’t realize that actors aren’t supposed to use their tongues when kissing in a PG-13 film. Hu wasn’t about to tell him. “I love Hugh,” says Hu. “He’s such a nice guy. He’s really such a gentleman.” Even though he isn’t a martial artist, Jackman was able to pick up the fight choreography quickly because he is a dancer according to Hu. “I didn’t even know who the X-Men were” until after the first movie, says Hu. She got cast for the film in spite of her “85-year-old” hands, but they didn’t tell her what the part was. When she did find out, she went on a talk show and revealed that she was playing Lady Deathstrike. It almost got her fired. “You can’t really practice wire work,” says Hu. Hu did a lot of her own stunts but says that she couldn’t take all the credit. “I had a great stuntwoman,” says Hu. “I don’t crash into stuff.” “If there’s an Asian character, they have to cast Asian,” says Hu. It’s part of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) rules. Hu got cast in Phineas and Ferb because she could scream the loudest. “I’m really going to miss the people on Warehouse 13,” says Hu. Eddie McClintock is really that crazy. “He made it a joy to go to work.” Jack Kenny made the on set environment what it was. “Everyone on that show really loved each other,” says Hu. “When these shows first get cast, everyone has their contracts set,” says Hu. As it goes on the show gets more expensive. “It just comes down to numbers” when it comes to show cancellation. “They just look at the bottom line.” “Keep watching Arrow. I’m not dead yet,” says Hu. |
