Cobb: A Corporation is a legal fiction
On March 30, 2012, Former Presidential Candidate David Cobb spoke to a group in Salt Lake City about the Move to Amend movement, how it relates to history and why it is importance.
Cobb talked about how the original colonies were set up as corporations with governors as the CEOs and used the United States Constitution to point out that people have power over the government.
“We’ve got far more power than we ever dare to imagine,” says Cobb. We are not exercising it.
In Salt Lake City, Move to Amend volunteers need to get 9,000 signatures by April 15 to get a resolution on the ballot recommending that corporations be stripped of their legal personhood.
Corporations used to have to go through a state’s legislative process to get a corporate charter. They also had to prove that they were meeting a public need that wasn’t already being met through some other way.
“A corporation is a legal fiction,” says Cobb, “because it requires us to pretend that it exists.”
The Supreme Court’s 1886 Santa Clara v. Southern Pacific Railroad decision granted that a private corporation is a person.
“Corporate personhood is a linchpin for how the ruling elite have hijacked our country from us,” says Cobb.
Move to Amend is holding a training led by David Cobb and Ashley Sanders on March 31, 2012 at the Peaceful Uprising Building at 1361 S Main St in Salt Lake City from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will be focusing on making a plan to create positive change.
