Republicans play the Trump card
Could the Donald really become president?
Could a more pompous, callous, uncaring and ignorant individual ever reach this far into the presidential elections in any other country? Donald Trump is the embodiment of white privilege and capitalist ideals run amok. Not only is he a loud mouth, he is a Grade A a-hole who has gained fame through wealth, a successful reality show where he is famous for saying “You’re fired” and shrewd business deals that include casinos and hotels – which means he is famous for making other people miserable.
Yet, his focus on money and overall ignorance are exactly what are appealing to the unwashed masses. While it is clear that a man, who flaunts the wealth that he has like Trump does, could never really have the best interests of the middle class, or any other class than that of the top one percent, at heart, Trump’s popularity is deeply grounded in the American mythos.
A self-styled, self-made egoist, Trump is the picture of independence. He is only a Republican because it is the party that most resembles his own ideals. If it were possible for an independent candidate to win the presidency, Trump would probably run his own campaign without joining a party. That would cement his reputation as a maverick and a Washington outsider. It would also make him the greatest presidential candidate ever – not even Teddy Roosevelt, who, by all reports, had many of the same characteristics as Trump, could win the presidency by running on a third party ticket.
Trump is charismatic. People make fun of his hair. They make fun of his duck/pouty face that he uses when he is looking particularly proud of himself. Some people even mock his money. However, no one can mock the fact that people follow Trump like he has a hole in his pocket and his $100 bills are falling out. The man created a catch phrase from one of the sayings that most people would hate to hear.
Trump speaks the truth as he sees it. Yes, his distorted worldview is informed by his wealth and his lack of dealing with people under a certain income. Yes, he says things that are offensive and plain stupid. Yes, he shouts, trumpets and postures in a way that Teddy “walk softly” would find repulsive. However, Trump is refreshing as a political candidate because he does not hide how he feels or what he thinks. Political correctness has no meaning for him. He is not afraid to offend people, and he is saying what he believes to be truth.
Trump is the perfect anti-Obama. Trump is everything that Obama is not. Obama is polished, appears smart and is always put together well. Trump is brash, seemingly uneducated, and well, his hair gets unruly at times. Obama will couch things in terms of political correctness, he will care about people who are hurt by his policies, and he will attempt to find consensus. Trump won’t care. Trump does what he wants and damn the torpedoes.
Could Trump become the next president of the United States? Right now, facing off against a Hillary Clinton who is embattled in an email controversy played up by the conservative media, Trump could very well take the presidency. Add to that the apathy of a younger generation that refuses to vote, and Trump would win hands down. For better and worse, Trump is the embodiment of what America has become, and he may be the only person that America is worthy of having at its top.
