Erin Gray blazes her own trail
The star best known for her turn as Colonel Wilma Deering in Buck Rogers in the 25st Century now represents other actors with her Heroes for Hire business.
Gray built her career on one question from her mentor, “What do you have to lose by trying?”
Gray is the first woman to say “Because I’m worth it” for L’Oreal.”
Gray got her start on television as a dancer on Malibu U.
She didn’t have much choice when it came to Buck Rogers. She was under contract with Universal, and Universal required her to go to an audition. She got done working at 6 a.m. that morning and had the audition at 11 a.m. Gray walked into the audition angry and was ornery with Gil Gerard. She got the part.
“What I love most about [Deering] was her strength,” says Gray.
Gray was in an emotionally abusive relationship at the time. Her husband had PTSD from the Vietnam War, and she thought she could handle it alone. With Deering she could put on a cloak of strength.
“What would it be like to be a colonel? I had to own it. I had to believe it,” says Gray.
“No one walks in off the street and gets two national commercials.”
When Gray did Battle of the Network Stars, NBC wouldn’t let her be the captain of the team, but she didn’t let that stop her. She wanted to win, and she would make sure that her teammates knew the rules so they didn’t lose any points out of ignorance. She would also give them the necessary wake up calls.
“I never lost,” says Gray.
“Robert Conrad said to me ‘ooo, you’re feisty,’” says Gray. “It brought out my competitive spirit.”
Parker Stevenson was her favorite leading man to work with.
“What I loved so much about Parker – he wanted to know what I thought,” says Gray.
Gray enjoys doing plays because of the instant feedback.
Gray, who represents Felicia Day, had a part on Day’s webshow The Guild.
“I would gladly do anything that Felicia asked me to do,” says Gray. “She’s amazing, in that any time I email her, I always get an immediate response,” and she’s a very busy woman.
“Dan Farr has put on a show that is No. 1 on my list,” says Erin Gray of Salt Lake Comic Con.
“I’m all about heroes and I want you to find the hero in you,” says Gray.
Going through your life and doing things with integrity, honor and right action will help you be happy.
“Do things for you, things that make you happy,” says Gray.
