Musicgarage.org: It's about us, it's about the band
According to Steve Auerbach, musicgarage founder, musicgarage.org is “still a startup almost two years later.” He says that the organization is “creating a new culture and a new place for kids to go that’s safe and fun.”
The core of the program is summed up in four words: “rehearsal, performance, recording and community.” Students come together to rehearse once a week. They are expected to learn the music before rehearsal and find their own teachers within the community.
One hundred percent of the students in the musicgarage.org program get to perform on stage. The band has performed at Earth Jam 2011 and is playing at the Utah Arts Festival on June 23, 2011.
Sponsored by Sony, Steve has brought recording music into the public school system. “Recording technology is now readily available on a laptop,” said Steve. He also stated that it’s nice to have all of the equipment in a professional recording studio, but that it isn’t required any more to produce quality music.
During rehearsal, students help each other learn when to come in and how to play parts. Steve tells them that “it’s not about you. It’s not about me. It’s about us.” Students learn about the “values of a good musician – it’s not about you; it’s about the band.” The sense of community expands from the students to the music coaches of the program where there is a reciprocal interaction. The music coaches and their friends and band mates support the students in the program, and the students support the music coaches.
