Playmobil Tour offers glimpse at creation process, FunPark offers toys and play areas
29 Jan. 2015 – The Playmobil Malta factory runs in three shifts during the day and makes 2,000 Playmobil figures an hour. (When the figures were put together by hand, they could only do 2,000 in an eight hour shift.) With 1,100 employees and some modern equipment, the Smiling Faces in the Making factory tour is well worth a visit, especially for those who grew up loving Playmobil.
The current tour takes people through four sections of the factory from the injection mold and the assembly of the figure to the painting and packaging, tour goers are treated to the magic of the process that turns plastic into toys for children all over the world. There are many interesting aspects to the process including the air compressor removal of possible defective packets to the stamping of color.
However, the best part of the tour is the feeling of magic that occurs when watching the process. Creation, even in a factory setting, contains something of the essence of what man aspires to be. Seeing toys brought to life and knowing that they will bring happiness to children is something that even the most jaded environmentalist can appreciate, even if the tour guide only mentions the program and passing and fails to mention the numerous other activities that Playmobil Malta has engaged in to eliminate waste and costs associated with the production of the product.
Tour goers get to make their own Playmobil figure. They also get a drink and a piece of cake at the FunPark, as well as a 10 percent discount on any products purchased that day. The price was 8.50 Euros, which is decent considering all of the extras.
The FunPark
If you are going to the FunPark, it is important that you bring a child with you or that you throw yourself into having fun without worrying about what others think. There is an outside play area that appeared close for winter. The indoor play area has several different areas that are themed – police, fire and rescue, home, carnival, and castle, but the characters are all mixed in together, and all of the smaller pieces have either gone missing or were never there to begin with. There is even a play area for those who are under 3 years of age.
The FunPark Café
The Café has a surprising variety of menu options with plenty to offer the vegetarians. The pasta offered a good flavor, and the staff was adept at turning utter chaos into a clean dining area within moments. The person I went with said that the chicken Kiev burger tasted good. Overall, the FunPark provides a low key opportunity for children to have fun, even if those children happen to be older than 20.
