'The Avengers' shows Joss Whedon's greatnessJoss Whedon is the greatest story teller of our time. From “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” to “Firefly” to “The Avengers,” Whedon has official taken the reins from George Lucas, and unlike Lucas with his Star Wars Saga and the last Indiana Jones adventure, Whedon’s films have yet to disappoint.
“The Avengers” is a masterly told story. The characters are crisply portrayed, and one gets the feeling that the film could have done without the awesome special effects, and it still have been great. That isn’t denigrating the special effects at all; it is just explaining how good the story is and how well it was done. The characters and their interactions drive the story. Brothers are pitted against each other, Captain America is out of time and Tony Stark is irreverent. There is a lot of storyline here to be combined with incredible special effects, and none of it gets lost. The closest comparison of the battle is in the last installment of the Harry Potter series, but “The Avengers” battle is so much more epic because it doesn’t forget who is participating in it. Everything about the film is just well done. How long will this group be able to stay together, and will Joss Whedon want to stick with it? Five more films seems a bit daunting, but Whedon did stay with Buffy for several seasons, so it will be up to the actors to enable the franchise to live up to the extremely high bar that the first movie has set. |
