- Share your skills by volunteering. “Everybody has a skill in something,” says Dr. John Librett, executive director for Splore, “Find a way to share that.” If you are a writer, think about developing marketing materials. If you know computers, volunteer those skills to keep the web site up to date.
- Organize a neighborhood barbeque. Get to know your neighbors. The neighborhood is the first part of community.
- Do more listening. Listening to people will give you the opportunity to help. Hear what their concerns and needs are and then ask what they want.
- Support a local charity in a deep way. “One day is not enough,” says Librett. Find a charity that resonates with you and make a commitment – one day a week for three years. Really become a part of the organization.
- Get outdoors. “Recreation is a social endeavor,” says Librett. Go to a park, check out the Jordan River Trail, and create that connection with nature. Smile at people while you are out. “We need natural environments to thrive.”
