Blue Slips are still important at level twoIn “The 7 Levels of Change: Different Thinking for Different Results,” Rolf Smith proposes using blue slips to generate and keep ideas for later use.
Blue slips are unlined pieces of paper that are 1/8 the size of notebook paper. The best use of them is to write one idea per slip, horizontally. It shouldn’t be a complete sentence and spelling is optional. It is important that it is written so that it can be used later. To focus idea generation, a keyword may be placed in the upper left hand corner. The color of the paper is important because as the blue slips are used, the mind will figure out what they are for. When the mind figures out what the blue slips are used for, they will act as a trigger for new ideas. Smith recommends coming up with a system that suits the person writing the ideas down. For him, he sorts them at night into ideas that are hot and should be done now, ideas that are interesting but he is not sure what to do with it and long range ideas. Random ideas go back into his pocket so that they may connect with other ideas. Blue slips can also help create better relationships by communicating the importance of what the other person thinks. Someone taking out a blue slip and explaining that he or she is writing down something important that the other person said can be flattering. As long as it is done sincerely, it will be accepted as a compliment. |
