Give the gift of Awesome: art edition
Give the gift of awesome: make this Christmas season count
for creativity and independence
Art
In a world that values efficiency, art serves no practical purpose. It can be used to cover the holes in the wall, but there are ways to do that more efficiently. Why would anyone purchase or value art?
Human beings are inherently inefficient. Love, anger, worry and other emotions are not efficient, especially in today’s societies where the perceived dangers are psychological and not physical. One of the core drives in people is the act of creation, even those who believe they are not creative can appreciate the effort that it takes to produce a piece of art, and the beauty that the piece brings to the world.
Not all art is about beauty. There are many pieces that are about social commentary, and there are pieces about changing perception. Art is one of the few things that people value because it inherently speaks to the human condition. We are creators.
The world needs to nurture its talented creators. Here are some artists who you might want to think about supporting through purchasing pieces of art. Giving the gift of awesome is as easy as pointing and clicking this Christmas season.
Bernard Micallef and Jeanelle Zammit blur the line between art and writing. Their choose your own adventure style books are the perfect gift for someone who wants to relive a bit of the childhood joy of discovering an ending that he or she chose while not having enough time to delve into the longer pages of an original Choose Your Own Adventure. The manga style artwork creates a booklet worth having around.

If you have a Doctor Who geek in your life, Mike Collins is the man to see. Collins has worked on storyboards for the shows as well as drawing for the Doctor Who magazine, which has given him insight into what is going to happen in the show before it happens. He is amazingly tight-lipped about the upcoming plot twists, but he draws a good Doctor among other art.
Paulina Vassileva creates art with themes from geek to something finer. Her prints include beautiful color palates with restful scenes, and the more whimsical aimed at a geekier audience. Cynt creates art, comics and plushies. Her comic stylings shouldn’t be confused with a lack of bite as she gives her take on popular fairy tales. Check out her Snow Queen Facebook page. The Dutchesse does work based on her favorite characters and Greek mythology. She creates buttons and charms as well as prints. |
