GO! GO! Power Rangers: Friday night action from Saturday Morning source
I saw this movie in Russian; something may have been lost in translation.
After a short prelude and introduction of the Power Ranger mythos incorporating prehistory, Power Rangers begins in the present day like a hyped up After School Special. With amazing special effects, good acting and all of the camp left somewhere on Saturday Morning, this translation to the big screen serves up a truly terrifying villain, especially in her first incarnation.
As someone who never enjoyed any incarnation of the series, I can recommend this movie with reservations; seriously, buy your ticket beforehand. It’ll save time at the door. Also, if you are someone who wants to share the Power Rangers with your children, this is not the one to show them unless they are older.
It does have at least 2 weak points. It is a commercial for Krispy Kreme donuts, which admittedly allows for a little levity, but it is clearly product placement no matter what language you see the film in. There is also a time when the Power Rangers appear to forget what they are, but it fits with the theme for the film, so it can be forgiven with the assumption that it was a conscious choice on the part of the writers and director.
Still Power Rangers is so much better than it has any right to be given its source material. It’ll leave you feeling good about life and may even have you believe in the power of teamwork. Go, Go, Power Rangers!
