Father Figures: A Comedy with Heart
Father Figures features Ed Helms and Owen Wilson in a buddy travel film as 2 fraternal twin brothers who are looking for their father. While the situations are unbelievable, (Would Terry Bradshaw really just accept that 2 strangers are his sons?) the movie is a comedy with heart. If you suspend your disbelief and really think that Bradshaw, and real people, can be as kind and naïve as the characters are in the film, you will find it enjoyable. It delivers a couple of surprises, and has its funny and its endearing moments.
Wilson and Helms play brothers well, and Katt Williams is great as the hitchhiker. Katie Aselton is a surprise as the woman in the bar. Her small role reveals a Cameron Diaz charm and style. As usual, Christopher Walken steals the scenes he is in.
Father Figures won’t win any awards. However, the story-telling structure and the generally nice tone of the movie is a salve for today’s audiences bombarded with explosions, death, and anti-heroes. Help your outlook on life and check out this film. It’ll help remind you how friends are made and what family is like, as well as what it should be like.
