magician conjures up fundraiser for math resources library
On April 17, 2015 at 7:30 p.m., Paul Draper will be holding a fundraising show called “Mysteries of the Mind” to help Grant Elementary establish a Math Resource Library. The show will be at Murray High School’s Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children. In an electronic interview, Draper discussed the importance of math and what it means for children to be good at it.
“We use math every day and those who excel in math have the opportunities to reach for some of the best jobs our country has to offer. With an early start excelling in math, students will have access to more kinds of math and interesting math as they grow,” writes Draper.
According to its website, Grant Elementary School expects the Math Resource Library to give teachers the resources that they need so that the school can meet its goal of an “to score at or above 80% proficient on the SAGE Summative test in Math.” The school is currently at 50 percent for grades 3 to 6.
Draper will be performing feats of super memory as well as teaching audience members how to use body language to help determine whether someone is lying. Some of his performance will involve the use of math principles.
“I have been known to perform feats of super memory with cards, tech peg memory systems and showcase magic squares. But the most common mathematical principals that will be used throughout the show include demonstrations that require logic, risk analysis, and statistics,” writes Draper.
Draper is a mentalist and magician who has been seen on television shows like “Pawn Stars,” “Mind Freak” and “House Hunters.” Draper has also been a moderator for panels at Salt Lake Comic Con and has worked in Las Vegas. He won the 2014 Merlin Award for Best Corporate Performer from the International Magician’s Society for “Mysteries of the Mind.”
