Warrior Innkeeper Creative and founder Benjamin Kreger
Benjamin Kreger founded Warrior Innkeeper Creative in 2009. The business has published or helped publish “around 20 comic books” according to Kreger and offers graphic arts services.
“I make independent comics in Independence, Oregon,” says Kreger, who is a writer, graphic designer and publisher. Kreger believes that small businesses like Warrior Innkeeper Creative are important to the local community. “We’re in a financial depression… a recession,” says Kreger. “Small businesses were important in the last recovery… We’re at that point again.” He supports other small businesses out of a sense of patriotic duty and to create a sense of community that he never had as a child. The City of Independence has given Kreger’s children a place to put down roots, and he says that the community bonds formed in Independence can lift everybody up. Kreger is a veteran who served on two tours in the Middle East and has suffered from PTSD and depression. His first tour was in Iraq; his second tour was in Kuwait. “That second tour gave me the financial means to actually get comic books made,” says Kreger. It also gave him the time to work because as a soldier in Kuwait, he was only on duty between nine and 12 hours a day. At the end of the tour, he had two books that he debuted at Emerald City Comic Con 2011. As a publisher and a father of four, Kreger recognizes that he cannot continue to reach into his own finances to support his business. He launched a Kickstarter project at Northwest Comic Fest 2015, which runs through Sept. 14, 2015, as a way to increase his reach and to help get the second installment of “Black Suit of Death” onto the printing press.
