'The Monster Squad' is the best monster teamup ever!
1987’s “The Monster Squad” is a better film than I remember, and I remember it as a fun diversion from my childhood. While I don’t remember all of the swearing, the movie holds up well, even against today’s special effects laden fare.
A group of 12-year-olds are fascinated by monsters, and when Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Frankenstein’s Monster show up, they are the only ones who can stop the creatures of the night from taking over the planet! With the help of a scary German guy, the translate Van Helsing’s diary and set out to defeat the scariest monsters of all time!
While it is relatively unfair to point out the best performances since they are all strong, most of the actors remain unknown even if they have had great careers. Ryan Lambert of “Kids Inc.” is the older kid who has access to shop class. Jason Hervey of “The Wonder Years” plays the bully. Duncan Regehr plays a regal Dracula, but the best performance goes to Stan Shaw who plays Detective Sapir in a supporting role.
For those who love the classic monsters, the Goonies or ‘80’s schlock, “The Monster Squad is a delight.” If you are looking for a monster team-up, it is better than anything you’re going to get in the next 7 years.
