Anne Serling takes on her first Comic Con
Anne Serling, daughter of the creator of The Twilight Zone Rod Serling, attended her first comic con in Salt Lake’s debut comic con. She held two talks about her father, his show and the book that she wrote.
Rod Serling went in for the relatively new procedure of heart surgery in 1975. “We really thought that my dad would survive,” says Anne Serling. “So it was staggering and stunning” when he didn’t. “It took me decades to work through this.” She didn’t really watch a lot of The Twilight Zone as a child, except for one episode. “Night of the Meek – We watched that show every Christmas, but my dad got a lot of hate mail (because of the show),” says Anne Serling. She has seen other episodes since. “I finally started (watching The Twilight Zone) more to see my father than to see the show,” says Serling. While researching her book, Anne Serling wanted to find out more about the business side of his life. “I didn’t know how much he had to battle with the censors and the sponsors,” says Anne Serling. He was very frustrated with the sponsors and censors. Anne Serling wanted to put the rumor to rest that he was depressed. See her talk about the three reasons to write this book. Rod Serling and the shows: “He had a preoccupation with time travel.” He really wanted a show that made a comment on something. “Prejudice was the biggest evil of our time.” “It’s (Twilight Zone) an aviation term.” “All these years later, he would’ve been so stunned that the writer’s guild” nominated The Twilight Zone as a top three show all-time. “He dealt with the human issue.” Anne Serling on The Tower of Terror: “I had to ride on it (Twilight Zone Tower of Terror) four times, and each time was more terrifying because I knew what was coming.” Famous Visitors: “I begged my dad to meet Shari Lewis,” says Anne Serling. “She was lovely.” Betty White “loved our dogs.” Other Notes: Rod Serling was a paratrooper. Rod Serling would have thought “unequivocally the reality shows are pretty horrifying.” |
