Nathan Fillion, Patrick Stewart, Karen Gillan and Kelly Hu at Salt Lake Comic Con FanX 2014
Things you can learn from Comic Con presenters:
Connect with your audience
The best celebrity presenters at Comic Con’s have some things in common. They tell interesting stories, they aren’t afraid to move about the stage, they are high energy, they connect with their audiences and they are themselves. Some of the weirdest questions come from those who know all about what an actor has been in. It takes a quick wit, honesty and a faithful to the celebrity answer to come off well at these types of gatherings.
Connect with your audience: When Karl Urban got a question about Doctor Who, he didn’t make a face or say he didn’t know about the series, he answered the question. Urban has no real connection with Doctor Who other than he is an actor that some fans might like to see become a Doctor. Fortunately, Urban likes science fiction (he was watching Battlestar Galactica on his flight to Salt Lake City according to stories both he and Aaron Douglas told), so Urban was able to talk about the show.
When Patrick Stewart was asked about currently popular shows, he said that he did not have time to watch them because he was working when they were on. Sure, he is working in the theater as an actor, but his experience is something that most people can understand. Work comes before television. Stewart also followed up that he would catch the Daily Show with Jon Stewart when he came home from working.
The point is that both actors found a way to connect with their audiences even if it wasn’t in a way that they were prepared for or that the audience was expecting. By connecting, they were able to deliver their messages and answer questions to a receptive audience.
