Songwriters Summit in Salt lake City March 22, 2014
On March 21, 2014, as part of the Songwriters Summit in Utah, Dean Dillon, Steve Dorff and Paul McDonald spoke at Salt Lake Community College’s South City Campus. The Students’ Workshop is a precursor to the daylong event at The Depot on March 22, 2014, and the songwriters addressed challenges that the industry and individual writers face.
“If you start writing music actively, you need to make sure you’re affiliated with BMI. It’s free. Or ASCAP – I’m going to be non-partisan,” says BMI Vice President of licensing Dan Spears.
BMI is a not-for-profit organization that helps songwriters get the royalties they are entitled to every time the song is performed. According to Spears, BMI returns 87 cents to songwriters on every dollar collected.
The BMI Live app allows performers to publish a play list. The playlist allows BMI to make sure that the songwriters are getting their share of the money that club owners pay for royalties.
Songwriter Dillon Dean says that BMI can help with suggestions for getting your music made.
The Songwriter’s Summit still had tickets available through Smithtix on March 21 at noon. The cost for tickets is $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Sponsors include FM 100.3, FM 103.5 and America First Credit Union.
