'Veronica mars' returns to the scene of the crime, if not TV
The Veronica Mars movie, funded through a Kickstarter campaign, is exactly right for the series and for the big screen. A character driven murder mystery that relies on the strength of its hero, the movie is well written, well-acted and features the witty dialogue of the television series.
The story brings Veronica back to Neptune, after she graduates law school, just in time for her 10-year high school reunion. Logan is again accused of murder. As soon as Veronica touches down, she finds that as much as everything has changed, it has all remained the same. Like a junkie, she, and everyone around her, fall into old habits. Self-referential humor and inside jokes abound, but there is nothing that should be off-putting to the uninitiated. The film sums up the series while rolling through the credits at the beginning, which helps remind casual fans who haven’t seen the series in a while what went on during high school for Veronica. Cameos include Jamie Lee Curtis, James Franco and the TV theme song, cleverly worked in at the beginning. This film was nice to have on the big screen. Once you see it, you will want to have more like it. It is available as Video on Demand, but there is just something about a movie theater that adds to the experience. Veronica Mars is an exercise in finding oneself and accepting what makes one happy. For that theme alone, it is worth seeing. You will want to stay until the credits are done rolling. |
