Why fairy tales are here to stay panel at Salt Lake Comic Con
Panelists and authors Jessica D. George, Jenni James, and Mette Ivie Harrison were brought together to discuss why fairy tales will never go away.
“Fairy tales are the classic underdog story,” says George who has written nine books. Everyone feels like the outsider, the weakest, the plainest and they make good.
In Nordic areas, the first son inherited everything; the second went into the military. The third got nothing. The third son making good was the story every boy wanted to hear.
“It always the youngest son,” says George, or the youngest daughter.

Ivie Harrison believes that it has to do with copyright. Fairy tales are part of the public domain and can be used without having to negotiate with anyone or pay any royalties.
“It’s a mistake to think that we retell stories because we love them,” says Ivie Harrison. “It’s actually about correcting something that went wrong in the story.” Fairy tales also provide an outline for writers. “They’re very simply told,” says Ivie Harrison. “The fans, who want to write and participate in the story,” keep it alive. For Jones, who is a mother of seven and has written eight books since January, fairy tales are magic. “I love happily ever afters; I love happy endings,” says James. “I love falling in love again and again.” Fairy tales are not just stories. “Each one has its own moral,” says James. “That’s the most important part.” Most fairy tales are very dark in their original form. That can also help children understand life. “Kids know what darkness is,” says Ivie Harrison. It is important to teach them how to deal with it. Jessica D. George: The best version of Hansel and Gretel is from The Simpsons. “Hans Christian Andersen was a deeply disturbed man.” “I’m not sure what 12uplets are called, but I am sure that it is painful,” says George about the 12 Princesses. “I’m going to fix this fairy tale.” Jenni James: “It’s been healing to believe again,” says Jones. Mette Ivie Harrison: Ivie Harrison wrote a version of Snow White to fix the story. “In Cinderella, the stepmother does all of her evil without any magic,” says Ivie Harrison. “White men control the world, and the superhero stories about white men are being told over and over,” says Ivie Harrison. I am not sure who said this (Jenni Jones?): “When we read Shakespeare, we hear echoes” because Shakespeare is so much a part of our culture. “That adds to your sense that it’s a classic.” |
