Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage
The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage has been temporarily closed for “refurbishment.” The submarines are always popular, but reports say that the lagoon was not properly sealed and leaks like a sieve. Water isn’t cheap, and Disneyland has appeared to succumb to the need to save on operation costs. Finding Nemo is not set in the future. Clearly, this ride does not meet the future requirements of a Tomorrowland.
Originally, the subs were a tongue-in-cheek journey inspired by 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea before the Little Mermaid took audiences there in 1989 and again with an attraction at Disney California Adventure.
There is talk about changing this area into a Star Wars themed ride, but as everyone, except maybe Disney, knows, Star Wars is set “a long time ago.” Not a Tomorrowland theme in spite of blasters and lightsabers. The original Star Wars was great. However, Tomorrowland cannot afford another blast from the past.
It is important to note that Finding Dory is scheduled to be release in fall of 2015 or summer 2016, which would make the submarines as currently outfitted relevant again. If Pixar’s track record is anything to judge by, the huge hit could parlay this ride into an even larger draw. Though with waits of about 45 minutes during the slow season, it is hard to imagine the attraction becoming more popular.
