YWCA closes shelter section due to lack of funding
(This article was written in 2012) Even though the shelter has been running at capacity, the YWCA in Salt Lake City is closing a floor of about 31 beds due to a lack of funding.
The YWCA serves the victims of domestic violence with their shelter, transitional housing and support services.
“We are the oldest, largest, most comprehensive provider of shelter, transitional housing, and supportive services for victims of family violence,” says Beth Erhardt, chief development director for the YWCA.
If there is no room available at the YWCA, the victims may be housed in another shelter if there is space or get a short-term stay in a hotel. The YWCA provides women and children with 30 days of crisis shelter in order to give the situation an opportunity to stabilize and to get the victims the services they need. Extended shelter services are available for up to six months on a case-by-case basis.
During the fiscal year 2010-2011, the YWCA had 44 rooms with 181 beds to shelter women and children who had experienced family violence within 30 days of their application for services.
Those who go into the transitional housing program may receive up to two years of aid.
The crisis hotline for domestic violence is (801)537-8600. It is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
