The Flash stumbles with 'Duet'
I was super excited when the Music Meister showed up on The Flash and announced that Barry Allen and Kara Danvers were going to have to follow the plot of a musical to the end in order to get out of the coma dream they both shared. A team-up, musical episode on a show that has thus far been running on all cylinders? Yes, please.
And it was oh, so disappointing. Even with the recruitment of Victor Garber who has been known to sing on several shows including Eli Stone, this show fell flat. It didn’t embrace what it wanted to be – a musical. Instead, it half-heartedly threw in some songs and one show-stopping dance routine. Rather than being the Flash’s version of “Once More with Feeling,” it was just a poor excuse for trying something different while still hedging its bets. Perhaps it’s not fair to compare it to the groundbreaking Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode, but if that’s what the show is going for, it should grab it completely.
And there was so much promise. The Super-Friend duet was awesome. It was funny and lived up to the episode’s billing. Maybe the rest of the cast can’t sing. Maybe it was too difficult to autotuned everyone. But seriously, up to this point the Flash has rushed headlong into the next great episode. It was hard to see this one trip up a great run.
