Palazzo Prince d'orange mixes modern comforts with history
See slideshow below.
If location is what you are looking for in a hotel, the Palazzo Prince d’Orange is prime real estate for anyone wishing to visit Malta and its capital city. The central location in Valletta allows guests the opportunity to be within walking distance of every major attraction, including a block from Merchants Street and two blocks from Republic Street. The rooftop patio provides spectacular views of the Grand Harbor.
The Palazzo is beautifully done to combine the modern with the classic as glass and limestone create an unparalleled atmosphere. Many of the rooms, especially in the common areas, have modern artwork set against the backdrop of baroque architecture though historic paintings and sculptures still provide the right amount of panache. Wi-Fi is available throughout the building.
The rooms are immaculate. Even the smallest is generously spacious and well-outfitted. Each room has a name, and Room Henrik, on the ground floor is a masterpiece of luxury and utility. The glass doors enclose a personal courtyard that opens up to the sky and gives the room a sense of airiness. The bed is comfortable and firm enough that when one person moves, the other person remains undisturbed.
The kitchen is large and, at the time of the visit, was stocked with coffee, tea, marmalade, butter and water. It also had an iPod docking station. The living room is also enclosed in glass doors that open up to the courtyard. The bathroom is a little on the small side, but the shower is delightfully done in stone, and the wash basin provides a nice accent. The towels are wonderfully soft.
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I was only able to communicate with them through email because I have no phone. Upon arrival, I was given a phone and a set of numbers in case I needed anything. The person at reception gave me a tour of the building, and since I had arrived early, took my up to the rooftop patio where I could enjoy the views of the harbor. When my room was ready, he returned to show me to my room and then to show me how everything worked. He was also able to recommend restaurants for vegetarians.
The Well-Being Center is located in the basement. The mirrors and lighting make for a nice workout area. The Sauna is comfortable enough for two people and the cedar scent provides the perfect way to distress from a tough day of touring.
The Palazzo Prince d’Orange uses environmentally friendly practices and encourages its guests to do the same. When I stayed there, they were fully booked making it impossible to view the other rooms. It is important to get your reservation in early, so that you can get the room you want. Stay in style and comfort while becoming immersed in the history of Malta. The hotel is located at 316 St. Paul’s Street in Valletta.
