The best thing about Salt Lake City Bonus #1:
Gilgal Sculpture Gardens, Artesian Well PArk, Wasatch Warm Springs
Anyone who does any geocaching in Salt Lake City will be familiar with these three places. Gilgal Sculpture Gardens, the Artesian Well Park and the Wasatch Warm Springs are weird mostly for their placement though Gilgal would be weird anywhere except maybe on Route 66, near the largest ball of twine or at Wall Drug.
Gilgal Sculpture Gardens
An odd assembly of odd sculpture set in the middle of a residential area on the outskirts of downtown Salt Lake City. Gilgal offers surprises at every turn. Entering the park, visitors are greeted with a Joseph Smith Sphinx, and the art work just gets weirder from there.
Whether it is the Mormon related sculptures or the quail that call the park home, Gilgal Sculpture Gardens deserves at least one visit for anyone in the city more than a week. Head over to 749 E 500 S and see for yourself what makes this half-acre so cool. Admission is free, and brochures are available to help visitors understand the sculptures and what they represent.
The Artesian Well
At 808 S 500 E, locals know that the Artesian Well Park supplies drinking water continuously for anyone who wants it. People routinely pull up to the tiny place and fill up gallon jugs and water bottles that fit on office water coolers. The water is safe to drink, and it is said that if the water doesn’t continually run, the well will dry up. This quarter acre park offers little else as everything is paved over aside from a small grassy area. However, people coming from as far away as a two hour drive testify to the health benefits and freshness of the water supply.
Wasatch Warm Springs
Located at 900 N 300 W is a natural warm springs on the outskirts of Salt Lake City. It is north of the abandoned children’s museum, a building that contributes to the overall creepiness of the area. Bathing in the springs is not allowed, but the homeless both bathe and do laundry, so approach this natural phenomenon with care, lest you see more than you intended.
The nearby park provides for a nice place to walk, and there is no more danger to the area than any place else. As of April 2014, the informational signs had been removed and the bathrooms are never open.
