Rachel E. Kelly talks about writing
When it comes to the larger questions like “why is life unfair” and “why do bad things happen to good people,” author Rachel E. Kelly turns to her art to help her with the solutions.
“I have questions, and writing is a great way to answer questions,” says Kelly. “The things I learn are important, and maybe other people can learn from these things.” One of the themes that Kelly explores in her Colorworld series is romance. She wants to create a believable romance within an authentic story. “A major issue in our society is unrealistic expectations,” says Kelly, especially about what a relationship should be. Kelly thinks the question that should be addressed is whether or not a relationship makes the people involved better or is it just a social convention. Kelly has written six of the books in the Colorworld series but has only two published currently. “I keep writing. I keep publishing,” says Kelly, who is publishing the series independently. “I believe in indie publishing.” Publishing keeps Kelly “from dwelling on imperfections.” Kelly says that the worst advice she has ever gotten was “A good writer must always be reading.” Kelly enjoys reading but finds that she can get caught up in books to the exclusion of writing. She says that a good writer should read, but that he or she also needs to write. Kelly is able to write because of her support system, which her husband is a big part of. “I have a Brad,” says Kelly. “My husband is a crazy good marketer.” Having a partner allows Kelly to focus on the creative aspects of writing instead of having to sacrifice time and energy to the more mundane tasks of putting out books. Kelly has a kickstarter campaign and her books can be found on Amazon (see links at right). |
