'Suicide Squad' doesn't die on the screen
I saw this movie in Russian. Something may have been lost in translation.
SPOILER ALERT!
Before Marvel’s Avengers, Suicide Squad would have been a totally acceptable movie. Maybe people didn’t understand where all the characters came from, who they were or what their motivations were, but that wouldn’t have mattered because the action sequences, and the special effects would have been dazzling enough to keep people in their seats.
Suicide Squad does have its boring moments, but it has an interesting way of explaining who the characters are, and what motivations they have, especially when it comes to Deadshot. Will Smith and Margot Robbie do a good job with their characters, and maybe the biggest surprise that no one has talked about is that Rick Flag ends up playing the damsel in distress in several parts of the film.
While the movie isn’t good enough to make me want to see it in English, it is certainly a lot better than X-Men Apocalypse. The Sorceress is an infinitely better villain with more depth than Apocalypse, and she doesn’t necessarily die at the end, even if that is intimated. Suicide Squad’s problem ends up being more one of timing and comparison. Sure, there are a ton of other movies that are better than Suicide Squad, but there are also a ton of other films that are worse. Suicide Squad finds itself right in the middle, and it benefited from low expectations and the god-awfulness that is Batman v Superman.
