Toweling off: Top down or Bottom up
When I was visiting my grandma at about the age of 5, I had just finished my bath and started toweling off. I started with my head, and moved down, but my grandma stopped me. “What are you doing, honey? You should towel off from the bottom up.”
This didn’t make sense to my 5-year-old brain because I knew all the drips went toward the ground and drying from the feet up only meant I had to dry off again when the drips from my shoulders and chest rolled down to my legs. But I dutifully changed my approached and dried off in the prescribed fashion.
Flash forward to today, and I have gone back to toweling from the top down, though it is a little more complicated than that. I stand in the tub and dry from my hair and head down to my butt. As I step from the tub, I towel off my feet before each one touches the towel on the floor, and I towel off the rest of my body. So it’s more of a half down and half up approach, but I find it to be the most efficient.
Why is it important to know how you towel off? Mindfulness and being in the moment are the keys to a happy life some would say. Drying off is a part of life that people tend to ignore, but the next time your drying off, follow your own movements and ask yourself why you do it that way. You might be surprised at what you learn.
