The most important words from the 'Avengers' Franchise
“If we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damn well sure we’ll avenge it.” - Tony Stark, Avengers.
“What's in a name? that which we call a rose\By any other name would smell as sweet.” - Romeo and Juliet, Bill Shakespeare.
In every Marvel superhero movie involving the Avengers to this point, they have won. They have protected the Earth, which makes Tony Stark’s proclamation in the first film all the more important for Avengers 4.
Up to now, the Avengers haven’t lived up to their team name. They’ve been the defenders, the divided, the saviors, the heroes… There hasn’t been a time when they’ve teamed up to avenge a loss. With Stark surviving the snap of Thanos’ fingers, it’s time for the team to come together the way it was supposed to. It is time for the name to mean something.
Maybe Nick Fury named his team on a whim, but that’s not really his style. Could he know that Thanos was coming? Probably not. What he did know, however, was that the U.S. and Earth couldn’t win every battle. It would need a group so resilient that it could comeback after a loss the magnitude of what Thanos has caused.
Black Widow, Hawkeye, the Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man and Thor, the original team, survived. In any story, that’s no coincidence. It’s a justification for Tony Stark’s declaration. Sure, his speech may have been given to Loki, but it was meant for Thanos, and the payoff is going to be sweet.
