- Stay informed on issues in the community. “The more informed you are on a wide scale, the more you will be able to think local and act global,” said Schmidt, AmeriCorps Volunteer and trails outreach coordinator.
- Leave no trace. Whether camping or just taking a short hike, take everything out with you that you brought into the area. There are no janitors in the woods.
- Be active in the development of community. We can become one community if we are active in building that community. To do that, we need to get to know our neighbors.
- Volunteer with local organizations. It helps to know what volunteer opportunities there are and to find the right opportunity for you. Nurturing people’s kindness for each other is also a benefit.
- Expand your view of what community means. Attend different events even if they might be uncomfortable. Go to a lecture on a topic you don’t know about. Greet someone there, make a friend, and it might not be so intimidating.
