Disney in Concert: magical Music of the MOvies inspires unmitigated joy at MCC in Malta
I wasn’t planning on going to the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra’s Disney in Concert – Magical Music from the Movies show until my friends from my Creativity and Innovation program stepped in and got me a surprise gift – two tickets to the show on 13 Feb. 2015. There have seldom been such examples of generosity and the perfect fit for a gift. The show is incredible.
The Malta Philharmonic’s performance is impeccable. It cannot be pecced. They played every tune the exact way that it should be played – summoning memory after memory of childhood, optimism and the magic of Disney movies. With every note, the audience was transported to a time when Walt Disney was still running the show and then to the next wave of great Disney films.
The highlight of the first half was the Mary Poppins sing along. If there is anything to complain about, it is the fact that the show did not include “Feed the Birds” – Walt’s favorite song. But that is just nitpicking. The performance was tops.
The second half featured Frozen’s mega-hit “Let It Go,” and that was the lone Frozen song. However, the highlight was the incredible and spirited performance of music from The Pirates of the Caribbean. The orchestra played with such gusto that there was no need for on screen visuals or vocals from the singers that performed during several other segments. There was also a special encore and attendees got a goodie bag filled with things from the sponsors of the show.
With the visuals and the composition of the musical scores, the evening played out much like a Disney Fairy Tale Compendium, where the stories are extremely shortened and still mostly intact. At the time of posting, there were still seats available for the 14 Feb. 2015 performance at the Mediterranean Conference Center – go get them. And then you can wonder, like I do, “Why am I not watching these Disney films more often?"
