Author goes to the movies with 'Warm Bodies'
On June 4, 2017, author Isaac Marion shared his brains with attendees of Lilac City Comicon. Marion is best known for his book turned movie “Warm Bodies” and has recently released the sequel to the book “The Burning World.”
Generally speaking, writers have very little input into the movie process once the rights are paid for, the studios can do whatever they want with the material. It was a little different for Marion.
“They were actually pretty cool about my involvement with the movie,” says Marion. “I’m just happy to be invited.”
Marion was able to spend a couple of weeks on set in Montreal and says the experience was surreal. Having an experienced member of the production crew call for Julie to be on the set was surreal. The crew member was talking like this character that Marion created was real.
“It was definitely the best thing that happened to my life,” says Marion.
Movies are a different medium than books, so they have different limitations. Movies tend to be shorter, and the subject matter has to fit in a certain box for the marketing department.
“Every single sentence has to do so much work” in a script, says Marion. “With the book, you can do whatever you want. That’s why I don’t write movies.”
Marion was happy with the casting for the film. He had envisioned Julie as more of a goth type but in the end the studio choice worked well.
“I think that Nicholas Holt really nailed that character,” says Marion. “The both embody the characters pretty well.”
