Captain America: Civil War, not so civil
If you want to go see Captain America: Civil War, do yourself a favor and stop reading now. While the Internet hasn’t ruined all of the surprises and I don’t want to spoil anything for you, there is the possibility that something I say will trigger your mind into figuring out what is going on. Believe me, going in with as little knowledge as possible makes this movie more enjoyable.
But maybe enjoyable isn’t the right word. Civil War takes on a darker, more intense tone and the stakes are higher than they have been before… That doesn’t mean that there isn’t any comedy. There are still the one liners and a… Let me stop here and say…
Spoiler Alert, seriously.
Marvel knows its characters and what drives them. It lets their motivations choose the path of the character rather than trying to fit the character into some preconceived notion about what the movie going audiences want. That is the recipe for success. Draw the story from the character rather than squish the character into a story. It is what made Ant-Man and The Guardians of the Galaxy successful, even though many people expected those two films to fail.
Marvel also does well at varying the tones of their movies. They aren’t all the same, even when they are dealing with the same characters. There are similarities in the film, but the overall qualities are different. Martin Freeman is always a joy to see, and Chadwick Boseman does a great job as Black Panther. No matter how you slice it, war is never civil, and when two friends fight, you know it is going to get down and dirty. Captain America: Civil War may not be the movie that audiences deserve, but it is the one that they want – epic, amazing and hard as vibranium.
