IN response to Las Vegas shooting October 2017
We can’t keep shooting each other. We can’t keep hurting each other. We can’t keep on going the way we have been going – hurtling toward mutual destruction through the actions we take against each other. Yet, we do, and yet, we will. Because, at the core of it, that is the human experience. We were born to kill.
We were born to run through the wilderness and eat or be eaten. We were born to war with other tribes because they are different, because they are unknown, because they encroach on our territory and take our real and imagined things, because we just don’t like them and they are weird. We were born to use our brains to come up with interesting and more powerful ways to kill each other. Look at our history. Look at our weapons development. Look at our healthcare system and tell me it isn’t so.
But that isn’t all that we were born for. We were also born to heal. We were born to create. We were born to make things better. We were born to appreciate beauty. We were born to make things. Look at the pyramids. Look at the Sistine Chapel. Look at any art museum and tell me it isn't so. We were born to become the best that we can be. And most importantly – WE WERE BORN TO LOVE.
Unequivocally, love is taught by every religion. It is seen in the actions of Mother Teresa, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Love can be found in those serving the homeless and in what the homeless give to those who are serving. Love is the very basic nature of man, and with that love comes the hurt.
So, if you are feeling hurt today, I urge you to reach out and find someone you love and hold them tight. Call them and hug them with your voice. Express your feelings to those you love. If you find yourself alone, find a place to be with others – a coffee shop, a library, a city park. Enjoy this moment. Love yourself and your place in this moment. And if you need help, if you can’t see or feel love, call a helpline to find the right solution for you.
People are diverse and they are made of opposites. Please nurture your creative side. Nurture your loving side and nurture yourself. We can only be found through those we hang out with. Find some cool people to spend time with.
