Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is Amazing
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them may be the best movie I have seen in 2016. With that endorsement, beware, there may or may not be spoilers ahead.
From the trailers and advertising campaign, this link to the Harry Potter world seems like an obvious cash grab. Warner Bros. figured they needed to do something successful, so they reached for J.K. Rowling’s most notable works. If you are thinking about this movie as such, you could be right. However, the story, the characters and the new world are all worth 3D price of admission. If you have it on IMAX in your area, see it that way.
Because the Adventures of Newt Scamander are set in 1930s New York, J.K. Rowling has the freedom to build a brand new world. New features, new creatures and new characters make this a vibrant story full of magic and wonder. Through the entire first half, the movie sets up an evil in the background. It doesn’t overwhelm the story and it allows Newt, Jack Kowalski and the 2 girls to develop their relationships. Kowalski is expertly played and the perfect foil for the rest of the magic world.
The fantastic beasts are really fantastic. Unless you are familiar with the source material, you will be amazed at the variety and imagination put into the creation of the creatures. You may feel at points in the film that you know what is going on. Don’t be fooled. With just a little sleight of hand, everything changes and the big bad is revealed.
I am not a big Potterhead, but Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them beats Doctor Strange hands down. Go see this film and be amazed.
