'The November Man' Old school, High impact Espionage
The November Man is an old-fashioned spy versus spy film that features high impact gun fights and one long chase scene. It is rare that a film about spies can be made without several explosions and gadgets that are super high-tech. Yet, that is exactly how this film is built.
This film tells the story of a retired CIA spy called out of retirement to save his former lover from deep undercover in Moscow. Along the way, he has to face off against his protégé. Feelings get involved and loyalties are questioned. While there are a couple of explosions, The November Man rests the power of the movie on its storyline, its characters and the acting chops of Pierce Brosnan, Luke Bracey, Olga Kurylenko and a strong supporting cast. The gun fights are quick bursts of action that punctuate the tension of the film as a long chase sequence. The high impact fight scenes are enough to make the audience hurt with each hit, and they continue through to the last frame of the film. Perhaps the best part of the film is the fact no one is ever really revealed as the bad guy. With every twist, questions remain about the person or people who are good and those who are not. When the big reveal happens, it is a surprise. While Brosnan runs through Belgrade, there is plenty of violence and some nudity and sex. The November Man is a genuinely good film. There are enough fighting scenes, enough cleverly done exposition and enough character development to keep the ardent movie fan interested and to keep the casual movie goer in his or her seat. Brosnan’s film is good enough to close a mostly lackluster summer movie season. |
