'Men in Black 3' lacks heart“Men in Black 3” lacks something. It still has Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones/Josh Brolin as Agents J and K. It has Emma Thompson as Agent O who is taking over for the deceased Agent Zed. It has plenty of aliens from all over the galaxy including a big bad guy whose skin splits open and houses another alien played by Jemaine Clement of “Flight of the Conchords.”
What it is truly lacking is heart. The cast seems to be going through the motions as if they were handed a script and didn’t like the story line. Smith’s typical mugging for the camera seems forced. The lines aren’t delivered as crisply or with the same timing as the previous movies. Brolin and Jones do their jobs as Agent K, but they seem somehow bored with the whole thing. Maybe the audience needed a reminder of what the team was before this film. The movie does have its funny moments, but it starts out focusing on Clement’s Boris the Animal. That makes the bad guy the focus of the film, and there isn’t anything funny about this bad guy. He is an assassin that seems a lot like a biker with |
a skin condition, a parasite and rampant gingivitis from an invading army.
As with all time travel movies, there are logic issues that flow from time travel itself. Take some advice from Austin Powers – don’t think about it too hard or you will go cross-eyed. For my money, the movie that “MIB3” knocked off the top of the box office, “The Avengers,” is by far a better story with better dialogue that brings home its message of teamwork much more effectively than “MIB3’s” message about the truth. |
