Avalon High brings King Arthur to a whole new lightVery seldom am I disappointed when I watch one of these types of movies; even less often am I pleasantly surprised by them. “Avalon High” not only provides all of the archetypes that teen films set in high school are associated with, it also provides a well-crafted story and a couple of unexpected twists.
“Avalon High” is about Allie Pennington’s new high school. As the story unfolds, she finds out that her classmates are reincarnations of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. She begins to see the truth of who the people are as they are revealed through visions and dreams. She finds that she must save Arthur from his evil half-brother Mordred or the world will be plunged into darkness. The cast is very likable, though the quarterback’s half-brother is a bit creepy. Molly Quinn is the most recognizable cast member – she is Castle’s daughter on the TV show of the same name. Allie’s parents provide plenty comic relief, all in keeping within their characters, and not much help as Medieval Literature professors. There are clearly drawn parallels between the high school students and the Knights of the Round Table. There is even a great football sequence where we find that the high school football team, the Knights, have lost to the Crusaders and must beat the Dragons to get to state. With little touches like that, it is no wonder why this film is just a bit more than pleasant diversion and moves into the realm of guilty pleasure.
