The Artists at Malta Comics Expo 2014
Artists’ Alley at Malta Comics Expo 2014 featured local and international artists and gave fans the opportunity to purchase unique artwork and prints. It also gave people the opportunity to get to know the talent behind the art.
Gilles Bone – The Maltese artist behind popular parodies like “the Throne of Magic” featuring Sailor Moon and “Frosty Flakes” featuring Frozen’s Elsa, Bone received a resounding endorsement from the cast of Sailor Moon for his work. Linda Ballantyne even wore a T-shirt with “the Throne of Magic” on it. For people who want to see their favorite science fiction and animated properties in a new, entertaining light, Bone’s designs satisfy the craving for comedy while paying homage to different fandoms.
Darrin O’Toole – From Ireland, O’Toole was on hand with “Glimmer Man,” “Earthruler” and “Tales from the Void.” “Tales from the Void” is O’Toole’s homage to TV shows like The Twilight Zone and the Outer Limits. The five stories contained in this comic have enough twists to satisfy fans of the Rod Serling genre. Not only are they vaguely unsettling, they explore human nature and offer a unique perspective on the world that harkens back to the days when science fiction was more than just special effects.
Roderick Pace – Local artist Pace offered guests the opportunity to purchase a folder that included five panels of heroes that could be combined to create an entire heroes gallery. Pace designed the alien Nexal, the mascot for small battery recycling in Malta.
Dean Fenech – Technically, Fenech is from Australia, but he has spent much of his life in Malta including graduating from the University of Malta. Fenech produced Apocalypse Rocked, which is billed as “Malta’s first rock/super-hero comic series.” The series is scheduled to have four parts, three of which were available at the Malta Comics Expo 2014.
Nicole Zammit – An up and coming Maltese artist who specializes in portraits, both real and imagined, Zammit makes her mark with color and adaptation. Her style includes anime and fantasy elements.
The Dutchesse – Currently in residence in Malta, the Dutchesse brings her cheery anime drawing style to a variety of art pieces. Prints, buttons and charms abound at her booth, but what you really want to ask for is a copy of her Greek Mythology inspired graphic novel. Don’t let her disposition and style fool you, this artist has depth.
These are just a few of the artists that gathered to help make Malta Comics Expo 2014 an enjoyable experience. If you get an opportunity to meet them, don’t just say hello. Take the opportunity to invest in their creativity and walk away with a piece of art that can be signed just for you.
